A special weather statement is in effect for St Kitts Nevis for the period of Saturday 17th December to Tuesday 20th December 2016.

The Antigua and Barbuda Met Services has issued warnings for sea bathers and more so, small craft operators. These warnings are in place for St. Kitts Nevis from tomorrow evening into Tuesday night.

Winds gusting to or near gale force winds are expected from Sunday afternoon into Monday, mainly over open waters, coastal areas on the eastern side of the islands and also elevated areas.

Seas are expected to respond to the uptick in the winds, they will become very rough by Sunday and rising up to as much as 12ft on Sunday. Tomorrow seas are expected to start increasing in heights and are expected to be 6-9ft. Seas are expected to remain above 6 ft into Tuesday or Wednesday.

These conditions are expected due to a forecasted tightening in the pressure gradient of a high pressure system. Conditions will be associated with this tightening of the gradient of the high pressure system and NOT any tropical cyclone.

Precautions: 1.

Small craft operators should avoid venturing far from port until at least Tuesday or Wednesday. Sea bathers should avoid the seas especially on the Atlantic side of the islands. Therefore, it is highly recommended that mariners without adequate experience should seek safe harbour before the uptick in winds and seas conditions.

Winds gusting up to gale force conditions can become problematic and uncomfortable to some outdoor activities so persons are asked to be guided accordingly.

The St. Kitts -Nevis Met Services and Antigua & Barbuda Met services will continue to monitor the conditions and provide updates as necessary.
