BASKETBALL CAMP HOLDS CLOSING CEREMONY

By:Curtis Morton

An official closing ceremony for the recently concluded Basketball camp for juniors, was held at the Grell Hull –Stevens Netball complex on Monday 29th August.

The ceremony was chaired by Miss Wanda Parry, President of the Nevis Amateur Basketball Association (NABA), who after opening with prayer, implored the parents to continue to send their children to such camps so that they can learn the game and one day possibly acquire scholarships to further their education.

She however, urged the children to ensure that they pay special attention to their school work, first of all.

Director of Sports, Jamir Claxton, thanked the SKNBA and the SNOC for teaming up with the Department of Sports to host the camp.

He then quizzed the participants on what they would have learnt during the camp.

He noted that apart from learning basic Basketball skills, they would have learnt a lot of lifetime disciplines and asked them to share the information with their classmates and friends when they return to school.

He thanked the parents, coaches and all who had helped to make the camp possible.

Romel Tobias, President of the SKNBA spoke on behalf of his Association and the SKNOC.

He had special thanks for the Great Adventure team members who came in to lead out in the camp.

He sent out a challenge ahead of the camp scheduled for next year, to have no fewer than 150 children.

He noted that with the children so involved in sports, they would be less inclined to get involved in anti-social behaviour.

He pointed out that the SKNOC asked that he make mention of the fact that they do not want their investment to go to waste.  He asked the children to remain focused on their school work and to remain ‘coachable.’

He took time out to thank the various partners who teamed up to make the camp possible.

Special awards were given to a few of the outstanding participants: Kenya Virgo; Kaya Williams; Jakieda Thomas; Algerice Gerald; Kiondre Lewis and Kareem Parry.

The participants were each presented with a T- shirt, with a promise that their certificates will be forthcoming shortly.

The vote of thanks was delivered by Miss Wanda Parry.
