CWC Golf Charity Event donates US$125K‏

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – The Advancement of Children Foundation (ACF) received a
significant boost towards its youth development programs, as Cable and Wireless
Communications (C&W) and its technology and content partners donated US$125,000
towards the Foundation as part of its Annual Charity Golf Event.

Now in its 9th year, the tournament, which was held in the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis this year, brought together over 72 participants that included a wide range of partners from the US, UK, Canada, Latin America, and the Caribbean, including Ericsson, Huawei, ESPN, BBC, Discovery, HBO-LA and NBC Universal.

“Together with our friends and partners, we are extremely pleased to support the
Advancement of Children Foundation as this year’s Charity”, said John Reid, the President of C&W’s Consumer Group, and the organizer of the event. “This donation is a continuation of a tradition that we started nine years ago in Trinidad and Tobago, where we combined our golf tournament with a social development and charity focus”.

According to Reid, C&W has always been committed to giving back to the countries in
which they operate. “We engage in a variety of community development initiatives across the region to positively affect the communities we serve. As part of this commitment, we often leverage our strong partnerships to help strengthen our programs for social investments. The Golf competition has been held in Trinidad and Tobago, Curacao, Barbados, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and now St. Kitts and Nevis. “In each instance, we have worked with our local teams to select appropriate charities”, he concluded.

Director of the ACF, Naeemah Hazelle stated that her team was very grateful for the
support from C&W and Friends. “The significant donation will go a very long way to help implement initiatives that will change the lives of children and communities across both islands”. According to Hazelle, ACF was founded eight years ago in response to the island-wide gang violence and is run by a voluntary board who help citizens develop and implement projects to help improve the conditions and opportunities of youth.

The Foundation supports five local projects per year. Page 2 of 2“The donation”, she said, “will be used to support these projects and will start with an island-wide literacy program, called Caribbean Reads, in seventeen primary schools across the country. The program will include free books to children, a training component and a
dedicated library in each school. The second project is geared to supporting a life-skills
centre, a safe space for interaction, counseling and life-skill development for vulnerable groups”.

In the past nine years, the annual charity golf event has supported a variety of youth centered programs, including children’s homes and places of safety, such as the SOS children’s home in Jamaica, the Sunshine Achievement Center for under-privileged children in Barbados and the rainbow rescue team in Trinidad. The tournament has also contributed to orphanages in Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico to better care for their wards, and has funded support programs for the Wilhelmina Fonds Breast Cancer Center in Curacao.

Reid acknowledged the tremendous support from numerous technology, systems and
programming partners, who have continuously supported the annual event through their participation and financial contribution.
