Basseterre, St. Kitts, June 29, 2015 (SKNIS): Eight nationals of St. Kitts and Nevis were announced recently as this year’s beneficiaries of the Cuban scholarship programme. The programme which has benefited citizens for almost two decades has provided the opportunity for study in Cuba, in disciplines ranging from Agriculture to Medical Science.
This year’s scholarship recipients and pursuing studies in Medical Science are Bragelle Nisbet (Nevis), Joyan Wiltshire, Verdwencia Woodley, Shenelka Maynard (Nevis) and Allgeron Audain. Scholarship recipient Quan Francis will pursue studies in Linguistics. Dr. Natalie Osbourne and Dr. Merisa Grant-Tate are returning to complete post graduate medical work in General Surgery and Pediatrics respectively.
At a reception at the Cuban Embassy attended by the recipients, family, friends, members of the St. Kitts and Nevis Cuban Friendship Association and Government stakeholders, the group was challenged to embrace the opportunity given.
Embrace the opportunity you have been given, stay focused, achieve your goal and return to serve your country, stressed resident Cuban Ambassador, His Excellency Hugo Ruiz Cabrera.
Kay Bass, acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reminded the group that they are ambassadors of St. Kitts and Nevis. “Represent the federation well” she said.
Reflecting on being selected, the consensus amongst the group was that “it is a great opportunity,” and each said, they looked forward to the challenge, and to embrace new experiences. Each also took a moment to thank the people and Government of the Republic of Cuba.
The prospective students are scheduled to depart in August.
