Joint Press Release from Nevis Water Department (NWD) and the Public Works Department (PWD)

At about 4:30 am on Wednesday 02nd July 2014, the Nevis Water Department (NWD) and the Public Works Department (PWD) received reports of water gushing from the road in the Hamilton area. Personnel from both departments were on site promptly. An assessment of the situation revealed that there was a broken eight inch distribution main originating from the Hamilton Reservoir that feeds to the Charlestown area. The NWD has since had the broken main repaired and normal water supply service has been restored to the affected areas.

In addition, the assessment also revealed that a portion of the road going west of the broken main was damaged by water that undermined the road base material. This unusual occurrence was as a result of water at high pressure forcing its way through the base course before it was able to break through the asphalt pavement.

As a result of this the PWD will undertake work to repair the damaged section of the road. This would involve the removal and replacement 220 feet of roadway including the asphalt pavement, sub-base and base materials. Both NWD and PWD regret the inconvenience caused and remain fully committed to bring the highest level of services to the Nevisian public.

Thank you
