Jonel Powell is “more mouth than clout,” says Marcella Liburd

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS – Central Basseterre Labour Party Parliamentarian in the St Kitts-Nevis National Assembly Hon Marcella Liburd said Wednesday that her opponent in the last general election, who was appointed an Ambassador “is more mouth than clout.”
Liburd, appearing on the Issues programme on Freedom FM noted that Jonel Powell, who returned his Diplomatic Passport to Prime Minister Dr Timothy Harris, was a candidate for the Team Unity coalition headed by Harris.
She pointed out that Deputy Prime Minister Shawn Richards is the Political Leader of the Peoples Action Movement (PAM), the largest bloc in the three-party coalition.
“He was supposed to be an ambassador to Shawn Richards in the Departments of Sports and Culture. How is it that Shawn Richards, Vincent Byron and all the others in the Cabinet seem so helpless, so unable to help Jonel Powell. Jonel Powell seems to have more mouth than clout,” said Liburd, who added that Jonel “seems to be a lightweight, so I don’t know how he is going to help the people of Central Basseterre.”
She is of the view that “something does not smell right in the TUG – Timothy Unity Government” and pointed that Powell has joined several persons including Clecton Phillip, Terry Adams, Douglas Wattley and Lennox Liburd, who have publicly expressed disappointment in the governance of the 15-month old Team Unity Government. Speaker of the National Assembly Franklin Brand resigned in April just 11 months in the post.
“He did not want to stay any longer. He had a few weeks to make him pensionable and he decides he does not want to stay anymore. When you see what is happening between Minister Ian Patches Liburd and their Chief Operation Rescue partner. When you hear the first responders and the rest are saying publicly. When you hear of the pulling and tugging between Minister Wendy Phipps and Minister Eugene Hamilton and between Minister Ian Patches Liburd and Eugene Hamilton,” adding that “too much pulling and tugging while the people of St Kitts and Nevis are suffering and their finances are getting worse, the country is going down the drain while the tugging and pulling continues in the TUG.”
She said most people are convinced that the St Kitts-Nevis Labour Party is better for the people and for the country.
