Official Visit To ROC (Taiwan) Yields Many Benefits For St. Kitts and Nevis‏

Basseterre, St. Kitts, May 31, 2016 (SKNIS): Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris, as well as other government officials recently concluded an official visit to the Republic of China (Taiwan) for the inauguration and the historic swearing in of Taiwan’s 14th term President and Vice President.

“The invitation at the courtesy and expense of the Government of Taiwan reinforced St. Kitts and Nevis’ solidarity and support for Taiwan’s fledgling democracy, and our continued interest in partnership and cooperation with the newly elected Government of Her Excellency, the President Dr. Tsai Ing-Wen,” said Prime Minister  Harris. “I am happy to report that our visit to Taiwan and our engagements have benefitted our country immensely.”

During his monthly press conference on Monday, May 30, Dr. Harris outlined a number of successful outcomes that emerged from the visit to Taiwan. One such area includes law enforcement.

“Law and order will benefit from Taiwan’s support for our CCTV project,” he said. “We expect experts from Taiwan to be here to fine-tune the ambit of technical support and other resources for this particular project. Financial support has been committed for the purchase of vehicles for law enforcement agencies including the Police and the Defence Force.”

He added that both the islands of St. Kitts and Nevis will be fully equipped from city to town with CCTV cameras and the allocation of vehicles will be equitably done across the federation.

The prime minister made mention of vehicles received thus far for the Police and Defence Force, with the most recent being handed over last week. “We are grateful for the imminent release of further funds to upgrade the fleet of transportation for the law enforcement agencies,” he stated.

In addition to the EC $13 million support for law enforcement, coming out of the discussions was the construction of the proposed National Heroes Park which will be financed by the Government of Taiwan. Dr. Harris added that preparatory works on the park will commence on or before July 2016, and it is estimated to cost in the region of EC$ 2.6 million.

Prime Minister Harris said that the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis strongly believes in “diligently pursuing the people’s agenda, and as such, the visit to Taiwan covered just that. “Our diplomacy then to Taiwan has borne fruits and there are ongoing projects of which persons are aware and which we have relied on and the assistance of Taiwan,” he added.

Dr. Harris said that the Government’s “diplomacy redounds always to the benefit of the people of St. Kitts and Nevis.”
