NIA CHARLESTOWN NEVIS (March 24, 2017) – The following is a notice from the Chief Medical Officer in St. Kitts and Nevis Dr. Hazel Laws.
The National Agriculture, Health and Food Safety Advisory Committee, which is comprised of the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Agriculture, Department of Consumer Affairs, Bureau of Standards and the Customs and Excise Department, convened an urgent meeting on Thursday, March 23, 2017, and arrived at consensus on the following two recommendations, as it relates to the importation of meat products into the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis:
(1) To impose a temporary ban on the importation of all animal and animal products from Brazil, as we have lost confidence in that country’s certification process for the export of meat.
(2) To remove/withdraw from the shelves all corned beef imported from and originating in Brazil, for detention until we have received more information on the specific batch numbers and companies that are implicated in the packaging of rotten beef in that country.
These precautionary measures are recommended to protect the general population from potentially tainted products
