ST.KITTS GETS THE BETTER OF NEVIS

Nevis went under to arch rivals St.Kitts, as the Leeward Islands 50 overs tournament continued in Antigua on Monday.

St.Kitts won the toss and elected to bat first and there was drama from the very first delivery. Nelson Bolan served up a snorter with the first ball, which was pulled towards mid-wicket and two fielders collided and the catch was spilt. Thereafter, no fewer than three other chances would go down, albeit difficult in some instances and two missed stumpings as well.

All the while, Larry Audain and Akeem Saunders, flourished in an enterprising 100 run stand, with both batsmen scoring half centuries.

Meanwhile, the experienced Jason Campbell and the more youthful Theron Bussue, united in a tight spell of bowling, which restricted free scoring at the end of the innings and bagged a few crucial wickets in the process.

St.Kitts got to a competitive 249 for 9 from their allotted 50 overs.

Nevis in response, lost the experienced Kejel Tyson early and it was left to the two youngsters in Saeed Williams and Ross Powell to steady the ship.

However, even though they batted well, the strike was not being rotated regularly and that served to put pressure on the middle order.

Justin Athanaze, sent in to speed up the process, holed out at deep midwicket; Tonito Willet was sent lbw for a golden duck and the SK team, knew that they were in with a chance.

Powell stayed around for a long time, executing a few delightful shots, in between stodgy defence but in the end, it was just not enough.
