Our thoughts and prayers go out to Mikhail Liburd and his family. Mikhail was seriously wounded just after midnight on Saturday last, in a shooting incident which took place in Bird Rock at the residence that he occupies with his father Ian ‘Patches’ Liburd.
We thank God that he is still alive and pray for his speedy and complete recovery.
Gun violence or any type of violence is unacceptable and must be stopped using all the resources at the disposal of law enforcement agencies in this country.
Violence is tearing at the fabric of our society. St. Kitts and Nevis has the dubious distinction of being one of three CARICOM countries that are in the top ten in the world in terms of homicide. This is not a statistic of which any of us can be proud. We are a better people than that.
We urge members of our law enforcement agencies to be diligent and professional in their sustained efforts to stamp out crime and violence once and for all. Any criminal act in this Federation is one too many and I urge our residents and citizens to be vigilant and to fully cooperate with the police in their investigations.
We must bring perpetrators of crime to swift justice. There are too many individuals in our midst who participate in anti-social behavior because they feel left out and marginalized. It is incumbent upon those of us who can make a difference in their lives to do everything we can to address those troubling issues that only undermine national development and retard the people’s prosperity agenda.
We ask the people of St. Kitts and Nevis to join us in prayer for Mikhail and appeal as well to anyone with information about this and the other criminal acts that have taken place over the past week, to please come forward and share it immediately with the authorities.
