Basseterre, St. Kitts, October 08, 2015 (SKNIS)—In stressing the efforts by his government to ensure the “proper functioning” of democracy in the country, the prime minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris, assured that there will be proper conduct of parliament meetings. Dr. Harris said that the Parliament must be a place where respect and decorum are commonplace. He also said that under the previous Douglas Administration the Parliament had degenerated into a “House of confusion” and a “House of mayhem” where the Speaker of the House and the Government Side “abandoned all regard for decorum and for procedure…” in the august body.
“We have been ensuring that Parliament meets and when Parliament meets the business of the people and the business of the country are matters that are attended to,” Prime Minister Harris said.
Prime Minister Harris was at the time speaking on the Government’s newest programme “Working For You”, which had its inaugural launch live on Wednesday, October 7, on ZIZ, WinnFM and Sugar City Rock.
The prime minister also pointed out that his government values the media, also referred to as the “fourth estate,” and promised the facilitation of the practice of a free press in the Federation with the passage of the Freedom of Information Act.
“The media perhaps is very powerful and very alive in St. Kitts and Nevis. And we have added to that ability for the media to thrive and to do well and to be a responsible media in its reporting, by bringing to parliament a Freedom of Information Act, which is part of the good governance agenda of this government,” Dr. Harris said.
