Charlestown-Nevis-Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture, Mr. Eric Evelyn, revealed on Monday that the United States Virgin Islands have issued a ban on the importation of mangoes from the Federation of St.Kitts and Nevis.
Mr. Evelyn indicated that he was not aware as to the reason for the ban but advised the citizens of the federation to be guided by the new policy in place and not try ‘to smuggle any mangoes into the USVI.’
He however pointed out that previously mangoes were not allowed into the USA mainland nor Puerto Rico and now the US Virgin Islands are also coming on stream.
The ban comes at a time when the mango season is just about peaking and it is around this time of year, that family members and friends living in those islands, normally look forward to enjoying the mangoes from the federation.
There was no indication as to the time span of the ban.
