CHARLESTOWN, NEVIS –The annual Alexander Hamilton tea party and scholarship fundraiser, which is jointly hosted by the Nevis Historical and Conservation Society and the Community Development Department, was held at the grounds of the Alexander Hamilton Museum, on the afternoon of Friday 10th January.
The ceremony was ably chaired by Mr. Keith Glasgow, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Social Development, who offered opening remarks, after the invocation by Mrs. Alvarine Williams. The national anthems of the federation of St. Kitts and Nevis and the United States of America, were beautifully rendered on fife, by Kris Hanley.
A comprehensive report on the scholarship fund was delivered by Senior Community Officer, Mrs. Lydia Claxton who indicated that at the commencement of 2019, sixteen individuals were registered on the scholarship program. The scholarship covers school fees, uniforms, books and other school supplies.
An intriguing poem referencing the great Nevisian son was rendered by Mauricia Claxton and company.
This was followed by insightful remarks by Mr. Kris Liburd, Board member at the NHCS, who admonished the students to set clear goals and aspire for greatness.
Mikkel Meloney was originally scheduled to sing a song related to Hamilton, but due to a voice problem, opted to recite it instead.
A special presentation was done by Mr. Robert Muro, who indicated that he has written a play on the life of Alexander Hamilton, from a Nevisian perspective, which will be released in the summer and introduced some of the cast to the audience.
Scholarship holder, Thyreece Daniel, then spoke of the benefits of the scholarship program.
The keynote address was delivered by Minister of Social Development, Hon. Eric Evelyn, who advised the students to aspire to great heights like Hamilton. He also congratulated the NHCS on the upgrades completed on the Museum and the Hamilton house.
There was a break from the speeches, as the Elizabeth Pemberton Primary school, with a superb exhibition of the cakewalk, and the Charlestown Primary School, with an enthralling display of the clowns, held centre stage, despite a heavy, sharp shower, much to the delight of the audience.
