A promising young athlete from Nevis, Kamarley Newton, has received an official send-off as he prepares to travel to Jamaica for a three-and-a-half-month training stint with the renowned Racers Track Club.
The ceremony was chaired by Adelvin Phillip, a long-serving coach at the Elizabeth Pemberton Primary School and a member of the Over-the-Top Track and Field Club.
President of the club, Kurvin Wallace, expressed gratitude to several supporters who helped make the opportunity possible, including the Ministry of Education, Minister Troy Liburd, the Over-the-Top Track Club, the Ministry of Sports, the St. Kitts and Nevis Athletics Association (SKNAA), the St. Kitts and Nevis Olympic Committee (SKNOC), as well as coaches and members of the public.
Wallace also expressed hope that more young athletes would pursue opportunities to compete internationally, noting that nearly 12 athletes from Nevis have already qualified for the upcoming CARIFTA Games this year. He encouraged Newton to take full advantage of the experience and work towards representing his country at the Olympic Games in the future.
Coach Royston Queeley of the Charlestown Primary School also shared words of encouragement, noting that he previously trained with the Racers Track Club and described the experience as invaluable for any developing athlete.
Newton also received well-wishes from his mother Shamoya Newton and his brother Kymarni Newton, who both expressed pride and confidence in his journey.
In his remarks, Kamarley Newton thanked God, his family, coaches, and the various organizations and sponsors that helped make the opportunity possible. He promised to make the most of the experience and represent Nevis with pride.
Newton is scheduled to depart for Jamaica on Monday, March 16, where he will begin his intensive training programme with the Racers Track Club.
In closing, Adelvin Phillip also acknowledged additional sponsors and supporters, including A1 Farms, SAGA Shipping, Tranquil Designs, Elizabeth Pemberton Primary School, Bull’s Gym, and supporters from Craddock Road, for their contributions toward making the training opportunity a reality.
