CARIFTA Athletes Receive Heroes’ Welcome in Nevis

Horns blared, and shouts of joy filled the air as the Nevis contingent of the St. Kitts and Nevis 2026 CARIFTA Games team arrived at the Oualie Pier, where they were greeted with a heroes’ welcome after their performances at the regional championships.

Among those present to welcome the athletes were Hon. Troy Liburd, Minister of Education and Sports; Jamir Claxton, Assistant Secretary; Aljay Newton, Director of Sports; members of the CSS Lions family; as well as relatives and friends of the athletes.

Following the initial greetings, a brief welcome ceremony was held at the pier. Minister Liburd congratulated the athletes on their outstanding performances and assured them that the government has plans in the works to further recognise their achievements.

Charlestown Secondary School Headmistress, Mrs Nichole Parris, also praised the athletes for their efforts, noting that several of them achieved personal best (PB) performances during the competition.

Dwayne Warner, who travelled with the team, commended both the athletes and the support staff for their dedication and hard work throughout the meet.

Special recognition was given to star athlete Kymarni Newton, who secured a bronze medal — the only medal won by the St. Kitts and Nevis team at the championships. Najeeb Kelly was also applauded for his strong performance, having come close to earning a bronze medal of his own.

In brief remarks, Newton thanked supporters for their tremendous encouragement throughout the competition.

The celebrations concluded with more cheers, congratulatory greetings, and photo opportunities with the proud athletes.
