Sri Lanka seized the early advantage in the opening Test against the West Indies after posting 308 all out on the first day of the series at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua on Thursday.
The visitors were anchored by a superb century from Dhananjaya de Silva, whose composed innings guided Sri Lanka to a competitive first-innings total despite a spirited fightback from the West Indies bowlers.
The Caribbean attack shared the wickets, with Justin Greaves emerging as the pick of the bowlers with three wickets. Alzarri Joseph, Shamar Joseph, and veteran Kemar Roach each claimed two wickets, helping to prevent Sri Lanka from posting an even larger total.
With only one over possible before stumps, the West Indies safely negotiated the day’s final six deliveries without loss, setting the stage for an important second day as they begin their reply.
The hosts will be aiming to build a strong first-innings total and erase Sri Lanka’s advantage when play resumes.
