Ministry of Education Advances Plans to Establish St. Kitts Parent-Teacher Association Council

Basseterre, St. Kitts — The Ministry of Education has taken a significant step toward strengthening collaboration between parents, teachers, and schools with the launch of the first series of zonal meetings aimed at establishing a St. Kitts Parent-Teacher Association (SKPTA) Council.

The initiative was officially launched on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, in response to challenges identified within the education sector, including inconsistencies in the operation of PTAs and school management bodies, as well as the absence of a unified organisation representing PTA interests at the national level. Although provisions for a National PTA Council exist within the Education Act, such a body has not yet been formally established.

Speaking on the initiative, Mrs Carol Boddie, Education Officer at the Ministry of Education, described the meetings as an important first step toward creating a structured parent-teacher organisation in St. Kitts.

“It is the first in a series of zonal meetings where we, as a Ministry, are working toward establishing a local PTA Council. This is something provided for in the Education Act, and we are finally gaining traction in bringing it to fruition,” Mrs. Boddie stated.

Ms. Roma Richardson, Special Projects Officer at the Ministry of Education, explained that the proposed council is intended to unify PTAs across the island and strengthen support systems for student learning and development.

“The St. Kitts PTA Council is an initiative of the Ministry of Education that brings together representatives from Parent-Teacher Associations across St. Kitts. It is intended to serve as a unified voice for parents, teachers, and students throughout the island. The council will work to enhance the learning experience through advocacy, resource mobilisation, and network building,” Ms Richardson explained.

The proposed SKPTA will consist of elected parent representatives serving within an executive structure. Members of the council will also play a role in the eventual establishment of the National Council of Parent Teacher Associations (NCPTA), as outlined in the Education Act of 2005.

The Ministry noted that the SKPTA will function as a central body to advocate on behalf of parents and schools, provide training and resources to PTAs, and align PTA activities with national educational priorities. The initiative is also expected to create a more structured and sustainable framework for PTA operations across the island.

Officials emphasised that the establishment of the SKPTA marks a critical first step toward the development of a fully operational National PTA Council, with the broader goal of improving student welfare and fostering stronger educational communities throughout St. Kitts.
