NEVIS CRICKET: Academy Officialy Launched Equipment Distributed to Schools: An Investment in the Future of Nevisian Cricket

CHARLESTOWN, NEVIS — In a landmark moment for cricket and youth development on the island, the Nevis Cricket Academy was officially launched today, accompanied by the distribution of cricket equipment to primary schools across Nevis. The occasion marks a significant step forward in the Nevis Island Administration’s commitment to nurturing talent, building character, and developing well-rounded young citizens.

The Nevis Cricket Academy has been founded on a vision that extends well beyond the cricket pitch. While the Academy is committed to producing outstanding cricketers capable of competing at the highest levels, its ultimate purpose is the holistic development of young people—shaping individuals of strong character, discipline, leadership, and resilience.

This vision is anchored in the core philosophy of the Ministry of Sports: “Developing Champions in Sport and Life.” This principle will guide every aspect of the Academy—from coaching methodology and academic support to personal development and community engagement. The Academy recognises that the values cultivated on the cricket field—teamwork, discipline, perseverance, respect, and excellence—form the foundation for exceptional lives.

The Honourable Troy Liburd, Minister with responsibility for Education, Youth and Sports, endorsed the Academy’s vision and officially declared it open. Minister Liburd underscored the Administration’s belief that investing in young people through sport is one of the most powerful tools available for nation-building.

“This Academy represents our Administration’s steadfast belief in the potential of every Nevisian child. We are not simply opening a cricket academy today—we are opening doors of opportunity, discipline, and aspiration. When we speak of developing champions in sport and life, we mean it in the fullest sense. Today is a proud day for Nevis.”

During the ceremony, Minister Liburd also distributed cricket equipment to primary schools across the island. This initiative ensures that every school has the tools necessary to introduce and sustain cricket programmes, removing barriers to participation and laying the groundwork for the Academy’s recruitment pipeline. Each school will receive equipment, including gear bags, bats, helmets, batting and wicketkeeping gloves, pads, and abdominal guards, among other items.

Minister Liburd emphasised that this distribution demonstrates the Administration’s commitment to ensuring that access to cricket is not a privilege, but a right afforded to every child in Nevis.

The launch of the Nevis Cricket Academy signals a new era in sports development on the island. With a clearly defined structure, committed leadership, and a philosophy rooted in the development of the whole person, the Academy is poised to become a cornerstone institution in Nevisian life for generations to come.
