The Nevis Disaster Management Department (NDMD) partnered with key community stakeholders on Thursday, July 9, to deliver a series of engaging educational activities aimed at strengthening disaster preparedness and building a safer, more resilient Nevis.
A major highlight of the day was the launch of the Junior Lifeguard Training Program, held in collaboration with WASH Junior Lifeguards. Running from July 9–10, the programme is designed for children between the ages of 7 and 15 and focuses on developing essential water safety skills, improving swimming ability, building confidence in the water, and increasing awareness of basic rescue techniques.
Earlier in the day, the Department participated in the St. Kitts and Nevis Fire and Rescue Services’ Annual Fire Safety Summer Camp, where officers delivered an interactive Disaster Preparedness Presentation at the Charlestown Primary School Cafeteria.
Students received practical guidance on a range of important topics, including fire prevention, hazard identification, risk reduction, emergency preparedness, and hurricane safety. The interactive session equipped participants with valuable knowledge and skills to help keep themselves, their families, and their communities safe before, during, and after emergencies.
The Nevis Disaster Management Department expressed its appreciation to the St. Kitts and Nevis Fire and Rescue Services, WASH Junior Lifeguards, facilitators, volunteers, and the many enthusiastic young participants whose commitment made the day’s activities a success.
These collaborative initiatives underscore the Department’s ongoing commitment to fostering a culture of preparedness and resilience across Nevis by empowering the next generation with the knowledge and skills needed to respond confidently to emergencies.
The Nevis Disaster Management Department remains dedicated to working with community partners to build a stronger, safer, and more resilient island for all
