NHCS Hosts UNESCO Officials for Discussions on Heritage Preservation and Memory of The World Initiative

CHARLESTOWN, NEVIS — The Nevis Historical and Conservation Society (NHCS) recently welcomed senior representatives from UNESCO and local stakeholders for important discussions focused on heritage preservation and the UNESCO Memory of the World Initiative.

Among those participating in the meeting were Dr Eric Falt, Director of the UNESCO Regional Office for the Caribbean; Dr Paul Hector, Advisor for Communication and Information at the UNESCO Regional Office for the Caribbean; Her Excellency Nerys Dockery, Secretary-General for the UNESCO St. Kitts and Nevis National Commission; and Janette Maloney, Project Manager within the Nevis Island Administration (NIA).

Representing the NHCS were Executive Director Terysia Herbert, Head of Finance Gillian Hobson, and President of the Board Isabel Byron.

The discussions centered on the ongoing preservation initiatives being undertaken by the NHCS, as well as broader conversations surrounding the UNESCO Memory of the World Initiative and the importance of documenting and safeguarding Caribbean history and cultural heritage.

Special attention was given to the historical routes of enslaved persons and the significant role Nevis played within this complex chapter of Caribbean history. Participants emphasized the importance of preserving, documenting, and sharing these narratives as part of the region’s collective memory and cultural identity.

The meeting also highlighted the value of continued collaboration among heritage organizations, governments, and international agencies in strengthening efforts to preserve the Caribbean’s historical records, cultural sites, and shared knowledge for future generations.

Officials noted that engagements of this nature continue to reinforce regional partnerships dedicated to protecting and promoting the rich heritage and history of the Caribbean.
