Remembering The Right Excellent Sir Simeon Daniel On the 14th Anniversary of His Passing — May 27, 2012

Sir Simeon Daniel was born in Barnes Ghaut Village, Saint Thomas Lowland Parish, Nevis, West Indies, to Joseph Daniel and Melvina Daniel (née Archer). He received his early education at the St. Thomas’ Government Elementary School in Nevis.

He entered the teaching profession as a pupil teacher in 1950 and earned the Leeward Islands Teachers’ Certificate in 1957.

In 1962, Sir Simeon began his legal studies under the Council of Legal Education in England. During his time in London (1960–1966), he worked at the London County Council, first as a clerk and later as an executive officer. In 1965, he received a recognition grant for outstanding meritorious service. He continued his legal training at the Inner Temple, Inns of Court, and in 1966 was called to the Bar in England as a Barrister-at-Law.

Upon returning to Nevis in 1966, he served as Assistant Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs and was admitted to the local Bar in the same year. In 1967, he was appointed Crown Counsel and later served as Registrar of the Supreme Court and Additional Magistrate. He entered private practice in 1969 in St. Kitts.

Sir Simeon was a founding member of the Nevis Reformation Party (NRP) in 1970. He served as Chairman of the Nevis Local Council from 1972 to 1980 and was elected to the National Assembly in May 1975 and again in February 1980.

Following the formation of a coalition government between the People’s Action Movement and the Nevis Reformation Party, he was appointed Minister of Finance and Nevis Affairs on February 19, 1980. He played a pivotal role in securing Home Rule for Nevis under the Independence Constitution in September 1983.

Sir Simeon Daniel became the first Premier of Nevis on September 19, 1983 (Independence Day), serving until June 2, 1992. He retired from active politics in 1992.

Among his many contributions to national development were:

The establishment of the Bank of Nevis Ltd. in 1985, promoting economic growth
The implementation of the Land Reform Programme, making land ownership more accessible to Nevisians
Significant improvements to infrastructure, including electricity, water supply, and road networks
The advancement of education through the introduction of government-run preschools and the establishment of the Nevis Sixth Form College
The expansion of the tourism sector, including attracting the Four Seasons Resort to Nevis

In recognition of his outstanding contributions, Sir Simeon Daniel was posthumously awarded the Order of National Hero in 2013, the highest honour in Saint Kitts and Nevis.

He was also the founder of the law firm Daniel, Brantley & Associates, which continues to serve clients across St. Kitts and Nevis, Anguilla, the wider region, and internationally. The firm was later joined by Mark Brantley in 1996.

Sir Simeon Daniel passed away on May 27, 2012, and was laid to rest with full military honours. On September 16, 2013, acting on the recommendation of the Federal Cabinet led by Prime Minister Dr. the Right Honourable Denzil L. Douglas, he was officially named a National Hero.
