Residents of Upper Monkey Hill to Receives Land Titles Free of Cost

Residents of Upper Monkey Hill St. Peters to Receive Official Land Titles Through the Ministry of Sustainable Development’s LAND Project

Basseterre Saint Kitts and Nevis [Press Secretary, PMO] – The Ministry of Sustainable Development continues its Land Allocation Normalization and Distribution (LAND) project for 2023 with the commencement of the regularization of lands in the Upper Monkey Hill area of St. Peters, Constituency #8.

Prime Minister and Parliamentary Representative for Constituency #8 the Honourable (Hon.) Dr. Terrance Drew, Minister of Sustainable Development the Honourable (Hon.) Dr. Joyelle Clarke, Permanent Secretary (PS) in the Ministry of Sustainable Development Ms. Shez Dore-Tyson, and Ambassador Cedric Liburd met with the residents of Upper Monkey Hill, St. Peters yesterday afternoon (May 24, 2023) to discuss the LAND project which includes the Freehold Title, and a Rehabilitation of Fencing Project.

Families in the area have lived on the lands for over one hundred (100) years without having an actual title of ownership. As a result, the Ministry of Sustainable Development opted to undertake this project to assist these families by regularizing the lands in the area.

Permanent Secretary (PS) in the Ministry of Sustainable Development Ms. Shez Dore-Tyson delivered her remarks to the residents of Upper Monkey Hill.

Hon. Dr. Terrance Drew, Prime Minister and Parliamentary stated that “The objective of the meeting is to discuss the regularization of the lands in this area, as families have lived here for generations but do not legally own the land. The initiative is in an effort to empower you, the residents and grant you rightful ownership of the land at no cost.”

There are one hundred and seventy-seven (177) households on approximately thirty-eight (38) acres of land.

Hon. Dr. Joyelle Clarke emphasized the ministerial requirements for the citizens which include details they need to provide to facilitate the programme.

“Our effort to regularize this area is to provide the appropriate land titles to the residents, give security of tenure, give appropriate access to infrastructure, and manage the remaining land stock” the Minister of Sustainable Development stated.

The meeting was chaired by Permanent Secretary Ms. Shez Dore-Tyson.

During her presentation, PS Tyson mentioned that “a fencing project will begin in the same area to complete the wall fence to beautify the area and make it more aesthetically pleasing. The aim is to uplift the environment of the community.”

She further noted that in addition to the fencing, the beautification initiative will include a mini park green space to further enhance the aesthetics of the community.

An officer from the Ministry of Sustainable Development was on hand to obtain the necessary information from the residents of the area.

The entire LAND project for the Upper Monkey Hill area is estimated to be completed within the next two years.
