Today, we proudly honour a true son of the soil, Elquemedo Tonito Willet, as he celebrates his 73rd birthday—a remarkable milestone for a man whose life has been defined by dedication, discipline, and historic achievement.
From humble beginnings on Nevis, Willet rose to etch his name into cricketing history. On March 9th, 1973, he made his debut for the West Indies cricket team at just 19 years old, becoming the first Nevisian and the first Leeward Islander to reach that elite level. His accomplishment was not just personal—it was a breakthrough moment for an entire region.
Beyond his achievements on the field, Willet devoted over three decades to youth and sports development as a Sports Officer on Nevis. With limited resources but unwavering commitment, he travelled across the island—often on foot or by public transportation—to nurture young talent and promote sporting excellence in primary schools.
His legacy lives on through those he mentored, including West Indies representatives such as Stuart Williams, Runako Morton, and Kieran Powell.
A pioneer, mentor, and national icon, Willet’s contribution to cricket and community development remains invaluable. His life stands as a testament to perseverance, humility, and service.
On this special occasion, NevisPages extends warmest birthday greetings and deepest appreciation to a man who has given so much to his island and to the game of cricket.
Happy 73rd Birthday, Sir Elquemedo Willet.
