Sports Camps 2019 Close

Friday, 26th July, saw the culmination of two weeks of exciting sporting camps, hosted by the Sports Department of Nevis.

An official closing ceremony was held at the ET Willet Park, to officially conclude the Cricket, Football and Netball camps.

The invocation was done by Ag. Director of Sports, Mr. Brian Dowe and this was followed by his opening and welcome remarks, as he also chaired the proceedings.
He noted that the camps covered the three sports of Cricket, Netball and Football and he was happy to observe that there were keenness and enthusiasm, demonstrated by the children.

A coach representing each of the three sporting disciplines, gave an overview as regards what was accomplished, during the two weeks.

For Football, Leroy JUN-JUN Sweeney indicated that emphasis was placed on passing, dribbling and shooting the ball and he was pleased to report that the players demonstrated such skills in matches played at the end of the camp.
There was also some emphasis on teamwork.

Kian Pemberton, in reporting on the Cricket camp, noted that emphasis was placed on batting, bowling, fielding and catching and opined that in the not too distant future, at least four of the participants, will make it to the West Indies team.

Mrs. Govanie Manners-Hendrickson, in reporting on the Netball camp, stated that the focus was on catching the ball; correct positioning of hands; passing the ball; learning the various positions of the court and various playing positions and learning to play in different positions.
She also noted that they also developed friendships during the period of coaching.

Minister of Sports, Hon. Eric Evelyn in giving brief remarks had heartiest congratulations for the Sports Department in their continued quest to develop the youngsters on the island, in the various sporting disciplines.  He also had warm words of commendation for the coaches for their effort and sacrifice.  He noted that a lot of the island’s young cricketers are making a huge impression in the Leeward’s under 17 and under 19 teams and some of the Footballers are also getting into the federation teams.

He indicated that Netball was lagging in this regard, but pledged his Ministry’s continued efforts to rectify the situation.  He then assisted in making the presentation of certificates and trophies to deserving participants, ably assisted by some of the coaches.
