Swimmers Create History

Four swimmers made history as they covered a distance of 60km in an attempt to swim from Tobago to Trinidad on Saturday.

William Carr, Patrick Lee Loy, Roger Watts, and John Procope began their journey from Tobago at 4 am on Saturday morning.

Their intended finishing point was Grand Riviere on the north coast of Trinidad approximately 12-15 hours later.

The swimmers were pummeled by strong currents which pushed them off course but held their nerve to complete the historic crossing.

The Aquatics Sports Association of Trinidad and Tobago (ASATT) congratulated the swimmers on the phenomenal feat.

“We congratulate our Aquatic Warriors for the levels of dedication and endurance demonstrated to complete their swim from Tobago to Trinidad,” ASATT stated in a media release on Saturday.

“The currents pushed the swimmers northwest after 10 hours of heaving waves and wind out of the East, which made it difficult to complete the journey. We are proud of them and salute their efforts,” the Association added.

The swimmers were coached by Edward Tuberoso and the 12-man support crew included safety officers, support swimmers, feeders, kayakers, drone operators, spotters, and Dr Lorraine Patience.

Three support vessels were used, the Gladys McCall, the Tropicbird, and the T&T Coast Guard vessel, the Interceptor.
