WAR HEROES REMEMBERED

Charlestown-Nevis-The annual service held in remembrance of the men and women who served in the world wars of 1914 to 1918 and 1939 to 1945, was held at the War Memorial square in Charlestown, on Sunday 8th November.

There was quite an impressive gathering of uniformed bodies and civilians.

The event commenced with an impressive march past by the Police officers and this was followed at 8.00 am by the observance of two minutes of silence.

The solemn service was led by Canon Ernest Flemming and involved several responses by the congregation.

The lessons were read by representatives of the Red Cross; Nevis Sixth form college and the Nurses, respectively.

One of the significant features of the day, was the laying of wreaths. Wreaths were laid in the following order:

His honour, the Deputy Governor General; The Hon. Premier; The resident judge; The president of the Nevis Island Assembly; Leader of the opposition; The ex-servicemen; Asst. Commissioner of Police; Officer commanding the Cadet corps; uniformed bodies: Nurses, Red cross, Scouts; Pathfinders, Girl brigades, Girl guides and School crossing guards; Nevis Air and Seaport Authority; Nevis sixth form college; Secondary and Primary Schools and Members of the general public.

The names of the persons who gave their lives in the service of St.Kitts, Nevis and Anguilla, during the two world wars, are listed as follows:

Herbert Jones; James Lake; Joseph Lewis; Joseph Mc Koy; Edward Mills; Hubert Mitchell; Donald Patrice; Edward Hope Ross; Horace Veira; Ivor Wakefield; William Wattley; Richard White and Robert Woolward.

1939 to 1945
