The 2026 Runako Morton/TDC-sponsored Primary Schools Cricket Tournament officially bowled off on Monday, June 22, with a brief but inspiring opening ceremony held at the ET Willet Park.
The ceremony was ably chaired by Director of Sports, Mr Aljay Newton, and commenced with an invocation by Pastor Gene Amory Jr. Attendees were treated to a unique rendition of the National Anthem of St. Kitts and Nevis, performed on the violin by Karri Daniel of the Violet O. Jeffers Nicholls (VOJN) Primary School.
Representing tournament sponsor TDC was Operations Manager, Mr Thyrone Hendrickson, who encouraged the young cricketers to compete with passion, uphold the spirit of fair play, and most importantly, enjoy the experience.
The players’ oath was administered by Aiden Walters of the Ivor Walters Primary School, while Sports Officer Kerisha Powell delivered the officials’ oath.
Minister of Sports, Hon. Troy Liburd, delivered the feature remarks before officially declaring the tournament open. In his address, Minister Liburd highlighted Nevis’ proud cricketing legacy, noting that the island has already produced seven players who have represented the West Indies at the international level.
He expressed optimism that the current crop of young players would continue that tradition of excellence.
“We have seen what dedication and hard work can achieve. Nevis has already produced seven West Indies players, and I am confident that among you are future stars who will carry our cricketing legacy forward,” Minister Liburd said.
Also in attendance at the opening ceremony was former West Indies cricketer Keith Arthurton, whose presence served as an inspiration to the young athletes.
Seven schools are competing in this year’s tournament:
Ivor Walters Primary School (Defending Champions)
Violet O. Jeffers Nicholls (VOJN) Primary School
Charlestown Primary School
Joycelyn Liburd Primary School
St. Thomas’ Primary School
St. James’ Primary School
Maude Cross Preparatory School
The annual tournament continues to serve as an important platform for nurturing young talent, promoting sportsmanship, and fostering a love for cricket among the island’s youth as they strive to emulate the achievements of Nevisian cricketing greats.
