Cricket: Windies Women Make It Three from Three at T20 World Cup

The West Indies Women maintained their unbeaten record at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, edging past Sri Lanka by five wickets in Bristol to secure a third consecutive victory and strengthen their bid for a place in the knockout stages.

A disciplined bowling performance, spearheaded by captain Hayley Matthews, laid the foundation for the win as the Caribbean side dismissed Sri Lanka for just 98 runs. Matthews led from the front with outstanding figures of 3 for 15, restricting the Sri Lankan batters and keeping the pressure on throughout the innings.

Sri Lanka’s resistance came primarily from Nilakshika Silva, who top-scored with 30, while Kavisha Dilhari added 21. However, regular wickets and tight bowling ensured the West Indies remained firmly in control.

Chasing a modest target of 99, the West Indies looked set for a comfortable victory before Sri Lanka fought back to create a tense finish. Nevertheless, the experienced Stafanie Taylor held her nerve, finishing unbeaten on 27 to guide her side home with five wickets in hand.

Captain Matthews contributed 17 runs, while Dilhari was Sri Lanka’s best bowler with figures of 2 for 22.

The victory moves the West Indies level on six points with Group 2 leaders England, keeping their perfect record intact and boosting confidence as the tournament enters its decisive phase.
