OECS Media Release

Dr Didacus Jules, Director General of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), accepted the Letter of Credence from H.E. Dr Christophe Nicolas Eick of the Federal Republic of Germany on Tuesday, May 12. Mrs Karolin Troubetzkoy, Honorary Consul of the Federal Republic of Germany, other members of the diplomatic corps, and Commissioners to the OECS were in attendance, along with the OECS Commission’s Leadership Team.

During his presentation remarks, Ambassador Eick stated, “As Germany’s representative to the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States. I know I can build on long-established friendly relations between Germany and the OECS. And I’m committed to working closely with the Commission, particularly in areas of priority concern to the organisation and its member states.”
He also emphasised Germany’s commitment to expanding climate cooperation in the region as a priority for his diplomatic tenure, “For climate issues in the Caribbean, I have a keen interest in furthering and strengthening cooperation, particularly relating to the impacts of climate change. Germany continues to be a reliable partner in the fight against climate change.”
Dr. Jules thanked Germany for its commitment to the rules-based international cooperation.

“At a time when some are retreating into narrow nationalism, we continue to deepen integration – through our Economic Union, our shared institutions, our common approaches to education, health, climate resilience, free movement, digital transformation, and regional governance. This is why Germany’s engagement with the OECS is both timely and strategically important.”
“Germany’s global leadership in climate diplomacy, environmental technology, ecological conservation, and green transition positions your country as an especially valuable partner for the OECS.”
He outlined five potential opportunities for expanded collaboration: climate resilience and environmental management; renewable energy and energy transition; research, innovation, and knowledge exchange; green economic development and skills training; and innovative financing and strategic partnerships.

Dr. Jules also reiterated the OECS’s belief in “maintaining diversified and constructive international partnerships”.

“We seek friendship with all nations while preserving our agency, our sovereignty, and our regional priorities.
“In an era of geopolitical polarisation, small states must avoid becoming satellites of competing powers. Instead, we must strengthen our strategic partnerships on the basis of mutual respect, shared values, and common interests.”
Dr. Jules closed his remarks with a reminder that resilience can no longer be pursued individually but must be built collectively.

Following the ceremony, Ambassador Eick and his delegation participated in a courtesy meeting where the OECS Commission delegation presented on ongoing work and immediate opportunities for alignment.

The OECS has enjoyed formal diplomatic relations with the Federal Republic of Germany since 2010.
