Powerful 6.0 Magnitude Earthquake Rattles Eastern Caribbean

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS — Several islands across the Eastern Caribbean were shaken on Saturday morning after a powerful 6.0 magnitude earthquake struck the region.

According to reports, the earthquake occurred at approximately 10:50 a.m. local time, with its epicentre located about 43.5 miles from the village of Codrington on the island of Barbuda. ()

Tremors were reportedly felt across numerous Caribbean territories, including Antigua and Barbuda, St. Kitts and Nevis, Anguilla, Montserrat, Dominica, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Saint Martin, Sint Maarten, the British Virgin Islands, the United States Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Saint Barthélemy, Venezuela, and the Caribbean Netherlands. ()

Regional monitoring agencies indicated that there was no tsunami threat associated with the earthquake, and up to the time of reporting, no major injuries or significant damage had been reported. ()

The quake was widely felt throughout the Leeward Islands and surrounding territories, causing brief concern among residents across the region.
