The joyous rhythms of Sugar Mas 52 resonated not only in the hearts of our people but also contributed to the remarkable surge of arrivals to our beautiful Federation. The recently concluded National Carnival period, spanning from December 15th, 2023, to January 2nd, 2024, witnessed 11,968 air passenger arrivals into St. Kitts & Nevis, with nearly 2000 more passengers gracing our shores compared to the same period in the previous year.
This influx of arrivals not only reflects the allure of our Federation as a tourism destination but also highlights the significant importance of Sugar mas to residents, returning nationals and international visitors alike. Sugar Mas has evolved into an annual pilgrimage, drawing people to revel in our unique blend of culture, music, and unity.
The impact of this national event extends well beyond the celebratory festivities, leaving a lasting imprint on our economy. Restaurants experienced an unprecedented surge in demand, with reservations fully booked to cater to enthusiastic patrons savouring our local cuisine. Car rental services also witnessed a remarkable uptick in business, as vehicles were swiftly rented to transport visitors across our picturesque landscapes. Meanwhile, our hotels, guest houses and AirBnb provided comfortable accommodations to guests from around the world.
Almost One Hundred Percent of the National Carnival Budget is spent locally and as such provides a significant and far reaching boost to the economy beyond National Carnival Events. Local entrepreneurs and artisans, including caterers, photographers and content creators, hair and makeup artists, designers, seamstresses, and vendors, enjoyed a significant surge in economic activity during Sugar Mas. Cleaning services maintained impeccable venue conditions, and infrastructure providers, including tent and stage rentals, lighting and sound specialists, as well as bands, DJs and entertainers, all made substantial contributions to the grandeur of Sugar Mas 52.
Hundreds of seasonal employees were also employed over the National Carnival period including vendors, gate and security personnel. The economic impact of National Carnival events was further magnified by the many private fetes hosted during this period. These fetes also provided opportunities for a host of service providers generating significant economic activity.
The far-reaching impact of Sugar Mas extends well beyond the carnival period, leaving a legacy of economic growth, cultural preservation, and unity in its wake. As we bid farewell to another successful Sugar Mas, the St. Kitts & Nevis National Carnival Committee expresses heartfelt gratitude to all participants, supporters, and stakeholders who contributed to this year’s vibrant celebration.
