Taiwan President thanks PM Douglas for support

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, OCTOBER 30TH 2013 (CUOPM) – President of the Republic of China (Taiwan), His Excellency Dr. Ma Ying-jeou has thanked St. Kitts and Nevis’ Prime Minister, the Right Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas for the Federation’s support at the 68th General Assembly of the United Nations.

President Ma personally thanked Prime Minister Douglas during a courtesy call on the ROC leader at the Presidential Palace in Taipei.

St. Kitts and Nevis has also supported Taiwan’s participation in other United Nations agencies.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs recently thanked Taiwan’s allies – Belize, Burkina Faso, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Nicaragua, Palau, Paraguay, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Sao Tome and Principe, Solomon Islands, Swaziland, The Gambia and Tuvalu.

“These countries were also pleased to see Taiwan gaining more opportunities to participate in U.N. activities on the back of increasing international support and improved cross-strait relations,” the MOFA said.

The ministry said it was referring to positive Taipei-Beijing developments since ROC President Ma Ying-jeou took office in May 2008, such as the signing of Cross-Straits Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA).

“The diplomatic allies also expressed gratitude for ROC assistance in helping them attain U.N. Millennium Development Goals by 2015 and fruitful bilateral cooperation projects.”

Separately, in keeping with this year’s U.N. General Assembly theme on the post-2015 development agenda, the MOFA’s Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York is scheduled to hold an international seminar highlighting related post-2015 health issues Oct. 11 in the Big Apple.

Staged under the auspices of Canada’s Academic Council on the U.N. System, the event will examine Taiwan’s experiences and achievements in pursuing international cooperation and expanding its participation in U.N.-related organizations and activities.

“As the world’s 17-largest exporting country and member of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum and World Trade Organization, Taiwan’s economic strength, along with its participation in the International Civil Aviation Organization and World Health Assembly, are evidence that the nation is ready, willing and able to play a greater role in the international community,” the MOFA said.
