CHARLESTOWN, NEVIS — The Nevis Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA), through the “Let’s Recycle Nevis” initiative and the Nevis Island Roll-Out Expansion Programme, is celebrating a highly successful first week of island-wide recycling collections.

After just one week of operations, a total of 2,020 pounds of recyclable materials were collected across the island’s parishes, reflecting growing public participation and environmental awareness among residents.

The parish collection totals were recorded as follows:

St. Thomas’ Parish — 300 lbs
St. James Parish — 520 lbs
St. Paul’s Parish — 200 lbs
St. John’s Parish — 540 lbs
St. George’s Parish — 460 lbs

Officials described the achievement as an encouraging sign of the community’s commitment to protecting the environment and reducing the volume of waste entering the landfill.

“Every bottle separated, every aluminium can saved, and every piece of cardboard recycled represents a positive step toward a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable Nevis,” the organization stated.

The NSWMA extended heartfelt thanks to households, businesses, schools, volunteers, truck crew members, and community partners who contributed to the success of the programme’s first phase.

Organizers also emphasized that the momentum generated during the first week demonstrates the strong potential for recycling to become a regular and sustainable part of daily life across all five parishes.

Residents are being encouraged to prepare their recyclables for collection and to listen for the recycling truck, which will operate once every two weeks. Updated collection schedules will continue to be posted on the organization’s Facebook page.

The next recycling collection cycle is scheduled to commence during the week beginning Monday, May 18.
