Public Notice: Single-Use Plastic Ban Now in Effect

The Department of Environment, St. Kitts and Nevis, has announced that the Single-Use Plastic (SUP) Ban has officially come into effect under the Plastic Waste Reduction Act 2025.

Under the new legislation, several items are now prohibited from importation, sale, and distribution within the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis. These include:

Plastic T-shirt bags

Styrofoam food containers

Plastic straws

Plastic utensils

Plastic cups

Plastic plates and containers

Businesses wishing to import approved alternative products must first obtain an Import License through the Department of Environment’s official website in the Permits and Licenses section. https://environment.gov.kn/

Additionally, all bioplastic alternatives must meet the required environmental standards before they can be approved for importation.

Penalties for Non-Compliance:

First offence: Fine of up to EC$3,000

Second offence: Fine of up to EC$15,000

Authorities are urging businesses and stakeholders to take the necessary steps to ensure full compliance with the new regulations, which are aimed at reducing plastic pollution and protecting the country’s environment.
