As part of the long term strategy for Sports Development in Nevis, The Department of Youth & Sports recently coordinated a series of workshops geared towards coaches, physical education teachers, and sports administrators. The workshops were done in collaboration with the University of Canberra.

During the period May 20th-23rd, members of the sports fraternity in Nevis had sessions on the following areas: Women in Sports, Team & Athlete Management, Leadership in Sports, Strategic Planning & Risk Analysis in Sport, Writing Grants and Sponsorship Proposals.

The sessions were facilitated by Sandy Daley from the University of Canberra and Chris Nunn of the Australia Paralympic Committee and School Sports Australia. Also here in Nevis was Professor Diane Gibson, Dean of the Faculty of Sports and Health at the University of Canberra.

The Australian Delegation had meetings with Premier Vance Amory, Deputy Premier Mark Brantley, and Junior Minister with responsibility for Youth & Sports the Hon Hazel Brandy Williams. The meetings centered around plans for continued collaboration between the University of Canberra and Nevis with the focus on capacity building. Ideas discussed included more training and workshops, staff exchange programs, technical support, and scholarships opportunities. Jamir Claxton, Director of Sports in the Nevis Island Administration was very instrumental in organizing the visit and workshops as he is an Alumni of the Australia Award Fellowship Program for Leaders in Sport.
