President of the Leeward Islands Masters’ Cricket Association, Mr. Alkins Rogers, has signaled his intention to step down, after the upcoming Leeward Islands Masters’ Cricket tournament, to be hosted in Antigua, in June.
In a letter addressed to the member territories, President Alkins stated:
“I wish to inform you that I intend to announce that I am stepping down from the position of President of the Leeward Islands Masters Cricket Tournament during this year’s Tournament which will be held in Antigua & Barbuda from June 7th to 9th 2019.
After serving for twenty one (21) years at the Helm, I am of the opinion that the time has come for me to turn over the reins to someone else. I will always be available to provide advice and guidance to officials, but I believe the time has come for the injection of new ideas and a resurgence of energy.
The greatest challenge over the years has been funding and to this end I want to personally thank the following individuals and Companies, Mr. Imran McSood of Nagico, St.Maarten, Mr. Cedric Jeffers of National Caribbean Insurance, St. Kitts and Mr. Naresh (Nash) Daryanani of Office World St.Maarten. Thank you, Thank you all.
In 1999 when I founded the Leeward Islands Masters Cricket Association, there were difficulties in trying to start this tournament involving all eight countries in the Leeward Islands. I am grateful to the late Whaldama Ras B Brooks and Iwandai Gumbs whose assistance was instrumental in the formation of this organization. As the tournament developed others like John Maycock, Alvin Prescod, Anthony Rawlins, Elkana Charles, Lydia Harris, Lawson Ferguson, Dean Baptiste, Roxie Joseph and Calvin Hughes provided much welcomed support. This tournament must be regarded as the pioneers in 20/20 cricket.
As the Leeward Islands Masters embark on a new journey never forget the road we had to tread. We must ensure that whatever we do, the integrity and future of the Tournament supersedes personal interests. It is important to note that no less than two occasions I had to rule against my country Anguilla in the interest and integrity of the tournament. Obviously, many in Anguilla opposed and resented my decisions but accepted the fact that as President I needed to be neutral and ensure that the interests of ALL islands were considered. It is this supranational approach to management of the Tournament that will ensure its longevity. I am confident that the foundation that we as a team have laid will catapult this organization into a position where we all will be extra proud. To say that I am leaving with some pain or emptiness would be an understatement, since for all 21 years the Leeward Islands Masters Cricket Association has been very dear to my heart. As I leave, I want to thank all the islands for their assistance and cooperation. A special thank you to those ladies from all the islands who made this tournament what it is today and I thank you from the bottom of my heart. May God continue to bless us all.
