The Adelvin Phillip AMP Cricket Coaching Program officially began at the Hardtimes Playing Field on Monday, July 14th. However, the official opening ceremony was held on Tuesday, July 22nd.
Mrs. Lydia Phillip, mother of Coach Phillip, ably chaired the proceedings. The ceremony featured a performance of the national anthem on the fife by Jelani Manners, followed by an invocation from Pastor Ron Daniel.
In his remarks, Director of Sports Aljay Newton noted that he had long encouraged Coach Phillip to initiate such a program and pledged his department’s full support moving forward.
President of the Nevis Cricket Association, Carlisle Powell, shared motivational stories of Nevisian cricketers who excelled at a young age and went on to play at the highest levels of the sport. He challenged the young cricketers to learn diligently so they too could become top professional players.
Coach Phillip then provided an overview of the program, noting that the theme for the coaching sessions—scheduled to conclude on July 31st—is “Crafting Champions One Ball at a Time.”
The young participants are being taught the fundamental aspects of the game: batting, bowling, and fielding. In addition, they are learning about fielding positions and developing public speaking skills.
The camp also includes guest visits from professional cricketers such as Derrick Parry, Elquemedo Willet, Keith Arthurton, and Mikyle Louis.
A match between the young cricketers is also planned toward the end of the camp.
