Basseterre, St. Kitts (National Assembly of Saint Christopher and Nevis)** – The Honourable Lanein Blanchette, Speaker of the National Assembly of Saint Christopher and Nevis, was pleased to receive a courtesy call from His Excellency Giuvel Orozco Ortega, Resident Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba to the Federation, on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, at the National Assembly Chamber.
The meeting underscored the longstanding bilateral relationship between Cuba and St. Kitts and Nevis and reflected the National Assembly’s continued commitment to strengthening parliamentary diplomacy throughout the hemisphere.
During the meeting, the Honourable Speaker congratulated His Excellency Ortega on his appointment as Ambassador, wished him a successful tenure, and encouraged him to experience all that the Federation has to offer. She also noted that the enduring relationship between the two nations remains firmly rooted in mutual respect for the rule of law, democratic parliamentary principles, and a rich cultural heritage.
Reflecting on her own experiences, the Honourable Speaker highlighted the significant contribution of the Cuban Government to the Federation’s national development through the provision of specialised educational opportunities for nationals, particularly in the field of medicine.
Ambassador Ortega expressed appreciation for the opportunity to learn more about the composition and operations of the National Assembly, as well as the Honourable Speaker’s reflections on public service. He also discussed some of the differences between the legislatures of the two countries and reaffirmed Cuba’s commitment to advancing parliamentary diplomacy through shared multilateral organisations such as ParlAmericas.
Additionally, His Excellency outlined several initiatives undertaken by the Cuban Legislature to promote civic engagement and encourage public participation in the legislative process.
The National Assembly remains committed to fostering stronger relationships with the countries with which the Federation enjoys formal diplomatic ties. As one of the Federation’s longstanding partners, Cuba has made significant contributions to the nation’s healthcare sector while consistently supporting the educational aspirations of its citizens, thereby helping to strengthen the country’s human resource capacity. In recognition of this enduring partnership, the National Assembly stands in solidarity with the Cuban people.
