CHARLESTOWN, NEVIS – On Thursday, August 6, 2026, the Department of Education hosted a courtesy visit from representatives of two long-standing partner organisations: Dr Lornette Mills, founder of the Dr Lornette Mills Charitable Fund, and executive members of the Nevis Association of South Florida (NASF).
Representing the NASF were Past President Ms Vida Baptista, Current President Ms Avonelle Greene, and member Mrs Lucina Stapleton-Wade. The visit offered an opportunity for both diaspora-based organisations to engage directly with local education officials and strengthen a collaborative relationship that has spanned many years.
The Dr Lornette Mills Charitable Fund continues to play a vital role in supporting Nevisian youth by sponsoring the Department’s annual Interscholastic Spelling Bee and funding a meal program that provides daily lunches for five students at every primary and secondary school across the island.
Through its partnership with the NASF—an organisation that has dedicated over a decade to educational outreach in Nevis—the Fund has co-hosted numerous community initiatives alongside the Department, including island-wide Spelling Bees and literacy programs such as “Blanket Night.”
The Department of Education expresses its sincere gratitude to Dr Lornette Mills, Ms Baptista, Ms Greene, Mrs Stapleton-Wade, and the members of both organisations for their unwavering generosity, commitment, and partnership in advancing education in Nevis.
