Manhattan, New York — The Rt. Honourable Dr Denzil Douglas, Minister of Foreign Affairs et al., began his schedule of diplomatic events as part of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly High Level Week.
Dr Douglas participated in the 26th Special Meeting of the Council for Foreign and Community Relations of CARICOM, where a number of agenda items were considered by the Council. Among those, the Council reaffirmed full support for Her Excellency Caroline Rodriguez-Birkett, Guyana’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations, who is a Candidate for the United Nations Secretary-General.
In addition, Dr Douglas participated in the Meeting on the Franco-Mexican Initiative to Regulate the use of the veto in cases of mass atrocities. He commended France and Mexico for their ongoing work to build support for this initiative over the 11 years of its existence. Today, additional countries joined the initiative, and others expressed their intentions of joining. He also committed Saint Kitts and Nevis to advocating on behalf of this key initiative.
The General Assembly opens tomorrow, Tuesday 21 September, with Brazil and the United States of America scheduled to speak. It is expected that Dr The Honourable Geoffrey Hanley, Acting Prime Minister and Head of the Saint Kitts and Nevis Delegation, will deliver the National Address for Saint Kitts and Nevis on Friday, 25 September.
