GINGERLAND, NEVIS, October 10, 2026 — The Joycelyn Liburd Primary School (JLPS) celebrated its 48th anniversary on Friday, October 9, honouring nearly five decades of educational excellence, dedicated service, and its enduring contribution to the development of generations of Nevisians.
The anniversary celebration, held on the school’s lawn, brought together members of the school community, government officials, former educators, and distinguished guests to reflect on the institution’s rich history and celebrate its achievements.
Among those in attendance were the Honourable Eric Evelyn and the Honourable U. Troy Liburd, Minister of Education, who is also a proud alumnus of the institution, as well as former Principal Mrs Marion Lescott and other guests.
For Minister Liburd, returning to his alma mater to participate in the milestone celebration was a particularly meaningful experience. He reflected on the school’s proud legacy, the dedicated educators who have contributed to its success over the years, and the lasting influence of Mrs Joycelyn Liburd, whose vision continues to inspire the institution.
Originally established as Gingerland Primary School on October 9, 1978, the institution has spent nearly five decades nurturing young minds, shaping character, and laying the foundation for generations of students to achieve their potential.
The celebration featured an engaging and interactive presentation of the school’s history, bringing cherished memories, significant milestones, and defining moments in its development to life. The programme highlighted the institution’s journey and the collective efforts of the many individuals who have helped shape its identity and sustain its tradition of excellence.
HONOURING DEDICATION AND SERVICE
A key highlight of the anniversary celebration was the recognition of educators whose years of dedicated service have contributed significantly to the school and the wider education sector.
Those recognised were:
Ms Cassandra Powell — 30 years in education.
Ms Jenny Webbe — 24 years in education, including 20 years at JLPS.
Mrs Rachael Williams — 19 years of service at JLPS.
Special tribute was also paid to Mrs Avril Richards-Williams for composing the school’s beloved song, a lasting contribution to the institution’s identity, heritage, and sense of community.
One of the morning’s most touching moments came with a rendition of “Can’t Give Up Now” by former students, several of whom now serve on the school’s staff. Their performance served as a powerful reminder of the enduring bond between the school’s past and present, demonstrating how the institution continues to inspire and shape the lives of those who pass through its doors.
Minister Liburd congratulated Principal Akela Brand, the teaching and support staff, students, parents, alumni, and the wider JLPS community on reaching this significant milestone. He also acknowledged the dedication of past and present educators whose commitment has helped establish and preserve the school’s proud legacy.
As the institution looks ahead to the future, the anniversary celebration reaffirmed the importance of quality education, strong community partnerships, and the continued nurturing of young people to become responsible, confident, and productive citizens.
The Ministry of Education joins the Joycelyn Liburd Primary School family in celebrating 48 remarkable years of learning, service, and achievement, while extending heartfelt appreciation to everyone who has contributed to the school’s continued success.
Guided by its enduring motto, “Aspiring for the Highest!”, the school remains committed to building on its proud heritage and inspiring future generations to reach for excellence.
Happy 48th Anniversary to the Joycelyn Liburd Primary School Falcons. May you continue to soar high
