The Environmental Health Department of the Ministry of Health has introduced a new Food Handlers’ Permit system, in effect from 12 October 2026. It applies to new applications and to renewals.
The department says the new system is meant to strengthen food safety monitoring and make applying for and renewing permits quicker and simpler.
What applicants need
| 1. Medical certificate | A valid certificate from a medical practitioner, for an examination done within the previous two years. |
| 2. Application form | Completed at the Food Safety Division, Basseterre Health Centre. |
| 3. Fee | EC$50.00. Photos are taken at the Food Safety Division, so a photo studio visit is no longer needed. |
| 4. Food Safety Training | Applicants must attend and pass the required training. |
| 5. Validity | The new permit card is valid for one calendar year. |
| 6. Renewal | Permit holders must report to the Health Department at least one week before their card expires. |
No permit will be issued unless all of these requirements are met. The department says the measures protect public health and help stop food from being handled by people who are not certified.
