Basseterre, St. Kitts (Public Infrastructure News) – Authorities have closed a section of Bay Road near Thibou Avenue in Irish Town following an unexpected asphalt collapse on Monday, October 12, 2026. The closure will remain in effect while the Public Works Department (PWD) undertakes the necessary remedial works to restore the roadway and ensure public safety.
Public Works Department engineers completed their initial site assessments on Monday afternoon. Following these assessments, repair and reconstruction work is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, October 13, 2026.
The incident follows an earlier occurrence in the same general area, when the sidewalk was undermined on October 20, 2025. The department subsequently carried out repairs, which were completed later that year.
In response to Monday’s collapse, the Public Works Department has mobilised an urgent response to assess the situation and undertake the necessary corrective measures. The department emphasises that public safety remains its foremost priority and urges motorists and pedestrians to respect the road closure and avoid the affected area until it is safe to reopen.
Public Infrastructure News will continue to provide updates as repair works progress and further information becomes available.
