The Charlestown Secondary School delivered a day of excitement and intense competition on Wednesday, 26th November, as the institution hosted its annual cross-country races.
While every race offered its share of thrills, the senior boys’ event proved to be the highlight of the day—and it lived up to expectations. The much-anticipated showdown between Kirmani Newton and Najeeb Kelly quickly developed into a gripping duel. The pair stayed stride for stride during the early stages before Kirmani surged ahead, appearing to build what seemed an unassailable lead.
However, as he approached the finish line, Kirmani began showing signs of distress. Despite encouragement to push through, he collapsed just short of the line, allowing Najeeb to power past and secure the gold medal.
Kirmani was transported for medical attention and later hospitalised. Fortunately, reports confirm that he is recovering well and is not in any immediate danger.
