Attorney-General Garth Wilkin AttendingUS House of Representatives Democracy Partnership Summit for Democracy

This week I am attending the US House of Representatives Democracy Partnership Summit for Democracy in Washington, DC on behalf of the National Assembly.

One of the topics for discussion today is “Free and Fair Elections – The Role of Congress in Promoting Sound Election Policies and Voter Participation”

Free, fair, and transparent elections are not merely a technical endeavor, but a test of democratic institutions; a way to link citizen interests to government, and a way to ensure democracy delivers.

Voting is every citizen’s right and duty. Free, fair, and transparent elections are essential for a country’s democratic success. In this panel, we will discuss parliamentary mechanisms to ensure electoral integrity.

Yesterday, we discussed “The Legislature’s Role in Promoting Anti-Corruption Initiatives” which was immensely important as we roll out the Good Governance Transformation over the next few weeks.

I was particularly pleased to dialogue with Ivanna Klympush-Tsintsadze, an MP from Ukraine, to whom I relayed our admiration for her people’s resolve and with whom I discussed legislative and diplomatic actions being taken in Ukraine.

The many lessons learned during this week will buttress your Government’s aggressive legislative reform agenda, for the benefit of our people.
