COOKING SKILLS DISPLAYED AT YOUTH MONTH COOK OFF

Basseterre, St. Kitts, November 19, 2015 (SKNIS): Janae Thompson’s cooking skills were rewarded when she was adjudged the winner of the Youth Month Cook Off competition yesterday, November 18.

Ms. Thompson prepared a dish of fish in a blanket with a creole sauce, coconut curried vegetables and breadfruit chunky with a beverage of star punch and a desert of pumpkin cream cheese roll.

The second place position went to Shayonce Browne who served conch-stuffed fish, carrot and asparagus bundle and pickled breadfruit with green star apple drink along with pumpkin cheesecake bite.

The judges who comprised Head Judge Dion French as well as Sahira David and Shermin Stevens noted that it was a commendable effort by all four participants.

Maluska Lapsey, Youth Officer who coordinated the Cook Off, informed that this was the first time the Verchilds High School had undertaken such an event, and that the participants came out of the Food and Nutrition class.  She elaborated that one participant was in fourth form while the other three were in Fifth Form.  The assistants who helped with cleaning of the cooking stations such as washing dishes and the cutting and peeling of ingredients attend the third form.

The competitors were allowed to come up with a menu and do some minor food preparation the day before the competition.

The High School Cooking Competition that is customarily featured during Youth Month will take place Friday, November 27 at the Tyrell Williams Primary School starting at 10:30 a.m.  Competitors from high schools around the island will have to prepare a dish from a mystery basket of ingredients.
