Cricket: Leewards Struggle Again in Regional Championship

The third round of matches in the West Indies Championship got underway on Sunday, April 26, with the Leeward Islands Hurricanes once again finding themselves under pressure against the Trinidad and Tobago Red Force.

Batting first, the Red Force posted a commanding 522 for 9 declared, led by captain Joshua Da Silva, who produced a superb 220. Amir Jangoo contributed 83, while Karima Gore was the standout bowler for the Hurricanes with figures of 4 for 86.

In reply, the Hurricanes suffered an early collapse, slipping to 0 for 2 before attempting to rebuild. By the close of play, they had reached 88 for 4, still trailing significantly. Gore led the resistance with a determined 60 not out, standing firm amid the pressure. Anderson Phillip was effective with the ball, claiming 2 for 27.

At Sabina Park, the Barbados Pride dominated proceedings against the Jamaica Scorpions. Barbados posted 439, before dismissing Jamaica for 142. At stumps, Jamaica were 22 for 1 in their second innings, still trailing by 275 runs.

Meanwhile, at Coolidge Cricket Ground, the Guyana Harpy Eagles and the Windward Islands Volcanoes remain in a closely contested battle. Guyana made 242 in their first innings, with the Volcanoes replying with 223. At the end of play, Guyana were 44 for 2 in their second innings, holding a lead of 63 runs.

With two days remaining, the Hurricanes face an uphill task to recover, while the Red Force and Barbados Pride appear firmly in control of their respective matches.
