Cuban Scholarship Awardees Receive Support from Parents and Alumni

Basseterre, St. Kitts, July 08, 2016 (SKNIS): Eight students, who were awarded scholarships by the Cuban Government to study in Cuba in disciplines including Health Technology, Civil Engineering and Medicine, said that they look forward to their studies with excitement as this is a big step for them.

Monique Harry, Simoneth Williams, Davishorn Buckshon (already in Cuba), Tishima Browne and Jeffvancia Matthew will be studying Medicine; Ava Spencer-Crawford and Carrie Bussue will study Health Technology; and Andre Hanley will study Civil Engineering.

All the students gave their promise to do their utmost best and to represent St. Kitts and Nevis as true ambassadors. The students also expressed sincere gratitude to the Government of National Unity for supporting them in their endeavors. They also thanked the Cuban Government for affording them the opportunity to study in Cuba. They were given words of support from former students who studied in Cuba.

“Cuba is one of the most wonderful places I have studied in,” said a past student. He stated that there were many challenges in various subject areas but encouraged the students to ask for help from the professors. He said that students should not be intimidated by the language but be confident in their abilities to communicate well. He said that it will be difficult at first but they will become more fluent once they are immersed in the culture.

Another past student said that it is an experience that will take much hard work and dedication and will all come down to how much they want it. She encouraged them to never give up although it may seem like others are on an easier road.

One of the recipients’ parents said that the scholarship shows that no matter someone’s economic background, that person can still live his or her dream. He encouraged the other parents to lend their support and pray for their children.

The students were awarded the scholarships at the Cuban Embassy annual scholarship awards ceremony on Friday July 1, 2016.
