Department Of Sports Summer Program Concludes

A brief but impressive ceremony was held at the ET Willet Park on Monday 19th August which effectively brought an official end to the summer program for 2013, conducted by the Nevis Sports Department.

The proceedings were chaired by Ag. Director of Sports Mr. Jamir Claxton who also gave an overview of the activities conducted.

He noted that the various sessions commenced in July and ended in August. He stated that the participation level was encouraging and gave the following breakdown:
Cricket—45 participants
Netball—23
Junior Golf—15
Tennis-37
Basketball—8
Swimming—51
Football-16

He had special praise for some of the parents who assisted with the program and noted that some of them had already promised to help with fundraising efforts towards the improvement of the program next year.
The feature address was delivered by Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Sports, Mr. Keith Glasgow who pointed out that sports was extremely important the world over as an avenue for young persons to learn lessons that will hold them in good stead for their entire life.

He referred to the recent increase in the homicide rate within the Federation and pointed out that the activities hosted by the Sports Department would serve as a deterrent to anti social behavior.
He urged the children to be diligent and work hard and to apply the principle of integrity to all that they do in life.

One of the Swimming Facilitators, Mr. Bentley Bissette also addressed the gathering and he thanked the children for their participation and thanked the parents for their assistance as well. He urged the children to ‘keep practisng.’

Sports officer at the Department, Ms Vera Herbert also joined Permanent Secretary Glasgow in presenting certificates to the children.

This was followed by snacks as the children had another chance to interact with each other.
