Dr. Drew accuses PM Harris of open hypocrisy on Land for debt initiative; says campaign promise to repeal Act will not be kept

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS – Opposition St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party caretaker, Dr Terrance Drew has labelled the Federation’s Prime Minister Dr Timothy Harris “a hypocrite” for publicly referring to the Land For Debt Initiative component of the debt restructuring programme as a sham, while privately naming a new Board of Directors to the Land Sales Agency to deal with the imitative and not following through on the election campaign and manifesto promises to repeal the legislation.

Page 17 of the Unity Manifesto in the 2015 General Election campaign states: “the Team Unity Government will repeal The Vesting of Certain Lands Act. The result will be that more lands will immediately become available for residential, agricultural, commercial and industrial development.” Prime Minister Harris is also on record as stating there are two Cabinet positions being drafted on the Land for Debt Swap matter.

Dr. Drew on Wednesday pointed out that while Dr Harris is condemning the Land For Debt Initiative, he is boasting about the economic gains that the Labour Government’s restructuring policy is doing for the overall economic success of St. Kitts and Nevis and openly accused the Prime Minister of “hypocrisy, deception and misleading the people at all levels of the society.”

Dr. Drew said while the Prime Minister is openly bashing the initiative, he is quietly implementing policy and not keeping his campaign promise to reverse the legislation.

He said Dr Harris knows he is not going to reverse the Land for Debt Initiative.  “His will continue to quietly keep the initiative and continue to implement aspects of the initiative while continue to be critical of it publicly,” said Dr. Drew.
